Duties and Responsibilities
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that:

  • Sets the global environmental agenda

UNEP’s Ecosystems Division supports countries to:

  • Conserve, restore, and sustainably manage terrestrial, freshwater, and marine ecosystems
  • Manage biodiversity and ecosystem services
  • Develop policies addressing ecosystem challenges and pollution
  • Enhance resilience to climate change
  • Integrate poverty-environment linkages into development planning

The Source to Sea Pollution Unit (SSPU) is guided by the project “Preventing and addressing the degradation of freshwater and marine ecosystems from source to sea,” which focuses on:

  • Sustainable wastewater and nutrient management
  • Addressing physical alteration and destruction of habitats (PADH), including sand and deep-sea mineral extraction

The Intern will work under the direct supervision of the Programme Management Officers (P4) on nutrients and PADH, with overall guidance from the Chief of Unit. Key responsibilities include:

  • Supporting implementation of SSPU activities related to sustainable nutrient management and PADH
  • Assisting in the organization and logistics of workshops, meetings, and events
  • Contributing to development of knowledge products and multimedia content (e.g., briefs, infographics, videos)
  • Conducting desk research on topics such as sand extraction, deep-sea minerals, noise pollution, and regulatory frameworks
  • Mapping stakeholders and supporting engagement, consultations, and dialogues
  • Supporting resource mobilization through identification of funding opportunities and contribution to proposals
  • Assisting with monitoring and reporting, data collection, and progress tracking
  • Supporting internal coordination within UNEP, including preparing briefs and meeting summaries
  • Assisting with communication and outreach, including content for newsletters, social media, and the UNEP Nitrogen Working Group webpage
  • Participating in meetings and workshops, taking notes, and following up on action items
  • Providing general support to the SSPU team and partnerships as needed

Qualifications/Special Skills
Candidates must:

  • Be enrolled in a Master’s or Ph.D. programme; OR
  • Be enrolled in the final year of a Bachelor’s programme; OR
  • Have graduated within the past year from a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. programme
  • Have a background in communications, public relations, languages, IT, graphic design, or a related field
  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in multicultural environments
  • Have an interest in the UN’s mission and values

Languages

  • Fluency in English is required
  • Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage

Intern Specific Text

  • Interns are not financially remunerated by the UN
  • Costs for travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the intern’s or sponsor’s responsibility
  • Non-resident interns may need to obtain a visa and work authorization before the internship begins
