Job Description

Chemonics seeks a project director for the anticipated USAID Integrated Health Systems Improvement Program (IHSIP) based in Washington, D.C. The program aims to support USAID in planning and implementing health systems strengthening programs in low- and middle-income countries. The overall goal is improving health, particularly of underserved, vulnerable, and marginalized populations. The project director will oversee program implementation and supervise personnel, ensuring the program meets stated goals and reporting requirements. We are looking for individuals who have a passion for making a difference in the lives of people around the world.

Responsibilities include:

  • Assume overall leadership, management oversight, and technical direction for large, complex, multi-country health activities
  • Serve as the primary liaison to USAID, implementing partners, host-country governments, project stakeholders, and counterparts in the public and private sectors
  • Supervise the senior management team, technical and administrative staff, and subcontracting organizations
  • Oversee implementation of program activities and teams to ensure technical coordination
  • Ensure all program assistance is technically sound and appropriate
  • Oversee project work planning, performance management, and strategic communications
  • Identify issues and risks related to implementation in a timely manner and appropriate program adjustments


  • Master’s degree or higher in public health, medicine, business administration, international development, or a related advanced degree
  • Minimum 10 years of professional experience managing large, complex health projects in developing countries, with at least eight years of experience working on health governance, health-care financing, clinical quality, or health systems strengthening programs
  • Demonstrated international credibility as a leader on matters of strengthening health systems
  • Experience leading large teams and managing programs that achieve results
  • Track record of progressive responsibility, including at least eight years providing senior-level leadership (e.g., as a project director or deputy director) to programs of similar scale, scope, and complexity
  • Strong ability to collaborate and build partnerships with host-country governments, U.S. government agencies, donor agencies, and international organizations
  • Fluent English speaking and writing skills required; ability to interact professionally in a foreign language (especially French, Spanish, or Portuguese) preferred, but not required
