Position: Protection and Safeguarding Manager

Location: Washington DC or London with travel to RI operations across Africa, Asia and the Middle East; up to 30 - 40% travel.

Reports to: Senior Vice President, Technical Assistance Department

Position Summary: The post holder will lead efforts to refine RI’s protection and safeguarding approaches across its global programming. S/he will develop detailed guidance and provide ongoing technical support to field teams and partners across RI’s portfolio to strengthen best practices, tools, and implementing strategies for protection and safeguarding. The post holder will also lead RI’s global Protection Steering Committee to ensure that RI’s Protection policies and procedures are effectively implemented in country offices and that protection/safeguarding matters are responded to in a sensitive manner. Manager must know/learn and abide by US and European rules, regulations, and donor requirements concerning protection and safeguarding.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure that RI’s protection policies and procedures are kept up to date, incorporate safeguarding best practices, and comply with government and legislative requirements.
  • Lead RI’s global Protection Steering Committee to develop protection and safeguarding training materials; work with country teams to identify and address training and awareness gaps, and; lead investigations of protection and safeguarding incidents that occur in the course of RI’s work.
  • Provide technical assistance to strengthen protection and safeguarding practices throughout the project life cycle at project, program and country level strategies for RI. The main elements of the project life cycle include (design and program development (including proposal design), implementation, monitoring, evaluation and learning.
  • Lead program level community of practice (COP) for safeguarding and protection to coordinate learning about protection and safeguarding throughout the project lifecycle and facilitate RI’s participation and leadership among leading protection and safeguarding networks/working groups/bodies.

Qualifications & Requirements:

This position demands a dynamic individual with a demonstrated ability to achieve results in demanding and often difficult environments.

  • A master’s degree or equivalent experience in a field related to humanitarian assistance and international development
  • Demonstrated experience in the application of Protection and Safeguarding technical advice, Protection programming and rights based approaches to development, with at least 7 years’ experience in protection and safeguarding program design and implementation in fragile context settings
  • Practical and theoretical expertise in designing and managing protection programs in at least one or more of the four RI sectors (health, education, economic opportunity, WASH)
  • Proven experience responding to and managing sensitive protection / safeguarding matters in a confidential manner
  • Experience developing protection and safeguarding resource materials, including guidance, tools, and best practices
  • Experience working in fragile settings that have conflict, post-conflict, or transitional state characteristics
  • Excellent oral and written English and communication skills
  • Strong organisational skills and resourcefulness
  • Have work permits as required to work from one of RI’s headquarters offices (US or UK)
  • Ability to work virtually with teams spread around the world
  • Experience in a diverse and fast-paced work environment
  • Willingness and ability to travel, including to fragile settings
