Job Description

McKinsey is looking for a business case writer for an anticipated programme with DfID to develop and refine cities and infrastructure programs. The broad objective of the programme is to improve the enabling environment for sustainable, inclusive growth-enhancing infrastructure service delivery and harness the benefit of cities for sustainable economic growth and poverty reduction. The program will have a global reach and will require travel. The role can be located also outside United Kingdom.


General scope:


The Business Case Writer will collaborate with the country teams and central project management team to build business cases in selected countries. Business cases will provide evidence base for intervention required (strategic case), appraisal for possible delivery and activity options (Appraisal Case), and roadmap for financial and commercial management (Financial, Commercial, and Management Cases).

Major responsibilities:

  • Responsible and accountable, as required, for the planning, development and production of business cases so that they comply with the requirements of the DfID
  • Peer review of business cases prepared by project teams, to ensure the quality and accuracy of the documents
  • Provide expert guidance and advice to project teams on the requirements and development of business cases
  • Prepare business case supporting documents for submission to DFID
  • Manage interactions with country project teams to support the production of business cases

Desired skills:

  • Demonstrable experience (minimum of 3) of preparing high quality, accurate business cases or similar documents for DFID, is essential
  • Experience of working to tight timescales within a multi-disciplined project team and experience of customer focussed delivery of technically challenging major projects to time and cost
  • A proactive approach is necessary with the ability to anticipate problems and provide solutions quickly and efficiently
  • Excellent numeric, written and verbal communication skills, ability to write clear, structured, and articulate business cases
  • Strong attention to detail and editing skills
  • A strong team player, able to lead and direct activities to ensure objectives are met
  • To be IT literate with PC skills which include Excel and Word, to an advanced level.
