Job Summary

Abt Associates is seeking a qualified molecular biologist to work within a fast-paced scientific team and support the molecular analysis activities of the PMI VectorLink Project and partner institutions in several project countries. The Regional Molecular Entomology Technologist will provide regional laboratory support to several country programs under the PMI VectorLink project for molecular analysis of Anopheles malaria vectors. This will involve remote support as well as frequent travel to partner laboratories to strengthen capacity and data quality. The selected candidate will take the lead preparing training materials and be expected to lead hands-on training of technicians. The Regional Molecular Entomology Technologist will support the preparation of updated protocols, design, execute and coordinate molecular analysis activities under the supervision of the technical director. He/she is expected to be detail-oriented, organized, adaptable and self-motivated and able to travel to various countries for conducting laboratory trainings. The successful candidate must be experienced with entomology laboratory techniques and be able to work independently with minimum support and guidance. He/she is also expected to have experience organizing training courses as well as a proven ability to analyze and report findings.

Key Roles and Responsibilities

  • Competency in conducting basic molecular techniques which includes:
    • PCR and qPCR methods, analysis and data interpretation
    • Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) and analysis
    • Sequencing and analysis
    • Enzymes detection and analysis (metabolic resistance)
  • Help establish harmonized protocols and research capabilities at a new lab space
  • A thorough working knowledge of the theory that can be applied towards troubleshooting and adapting protocols for individual labs
  • Ability to teach to varying degrees of skill and improve understanding and molecular knowledge of laboratory technicians
  • Coordinates with VectorLink Procurement and Logistics team to ensure supply and delivery of laboratory reagents and equipment to countries.
  • Responsible for adhering to standardized protocols for to conduct biomolecular sample analysis
  • Support countries to follow established guidelines and protocols to ensure molecular analysis of samples are run accordingly
  • Conducts established quality control analysis of mosquito samples related to molecular analysis/or related applications
  • Independently verifies the results for routine samples in each supported country
  • Balance quality and speed, working closely with other scientists to advance projects
  • Support the creation and expansion of the company’s intellectual property
  • Support the project on study design and/or operational research

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree (minimum) or PhD (desirable) in molecular biology or other relevant field
  • 10 years’ experience in lab setting (preferred) and skill in molecular biology procedures
  • Excellent organizational skills with a meticulous attention to detail
  • Clear communicator; responsible; and demonstrated ability to work with a minimum of direction and supervision
  • Experience working with mosquito vector biology desirable
  • Knowledge of laboratory health and safety practices
  • Thorough understanding of molecular biology techniques including nucleic acid preparation and next-gen sequencing
  • Demonstrated ability to work efficiently and follow instructions to meet established timelines
  • Positive interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with individuals from a variety of levels and function
  • Strong quantitative and analytical skills
  • Ability to coordinate parallel tasks across multiple projects and countries, demonstrating prioritization
  • Ability to develop, adapt and update established laboratory protocols as required
  • Readiness to travel to different countries for training and troubleshooting
  • English language fluency essential (oral and written); working knowledge of French highly preferred
  • Experience with USAID and donor projects is highly desirable


Minimum Qualifications

  • MA/MBA with 7 - 10 years of experience OR PhD with 4 - 6 years of experience OR the equivalent combination of education and experience
