Job Description

Reporter on Humanitarian Aid and Global Cooperation (Full-Time)

Future of Good seeks a full-time, experienced journalist on humanitarian aid and global cooperation.

The journalist will work closely with Future of Good’s editorial team on ambitious reporting, analysis and storytelling on news, innovative solutions, aid challenges, policy advocacy, development challenges, creative multi-sector partnerships, changing business models, the role of technologies, overseas volunteer programs, localization issues, federal government’s grants and contributions system renewal, and learn about what could make the Canadian aid and global cooperation ecosystem — and the communities it serves — more resilient, relevant and forward-looking in a fast-changing landscape.

The journalist will cover progress and report stories on government and civil society initiatives, partnerships, news, and innovative solutions from across Canada’s aid and global cooperation ecosystem, both within the country and from the Global South.

Working as part of the Future of Good editorial team, the reporter listens to, writes about, and engages with grassroots groups, activists, civil society organizations, frontline aid workers, philanthropic leaders, impact investors, public servants, and corporate citizenship leaders across Canada and in the Global South.

The fellowship aims to centre the voices of young people, women, LGBTQ+, Black, Indigenous and people of colour working in and contributing to the sector within Canada and the Global South.

More about the role:

Your first year with us will look a little bit like this:

In your first 30 days, you’ll get up to speed on key trends, developments, people, and issues from across Canada’s aid and global cooperation ecosystem and will work on developing sources on that beat. You’ll be on top of breaking news and begin to identify trends that could become more prominent features and live journalism events.

You will also develop a good understanding of your role within the broader Future of Good editorial team and work on stories collaboratively with other reporters and the live journalism production team.

After your first six months, you’ll have a firm grasp of the Canadian aid and global development ecosystem, tapping sources you’ve made inside the public sector institutions and former executives, elected officials, civil society organizations, thought leaders and grassroots movements. You’ll dig into the trends, politics, policy, innovations, challenges and internal debates shaping the aid and global development ecosystem you cover.

You’ll have become a respected and trusted voice in the sector, having cultivated sources to write nuanced stories based on signals, data, tips and information from your past coverage.

As one of our experienced reporters, you will embody an entrepreneurial spirit and a passion for Future of Good’s mission and have the following skills:

  • Minimum five to seven years of professional, published journalism experience in a reputable publication or media organization, preferably on topics such as human rights, global issues, public policy, social justice or civil society
  • Proven source-building skills and experience as a beat reporter
  • Experience writing multiple formats, including breaking news, in-depth feature stories, solutions journalism, investigative journalism, lists, interviews, data stories with published clips
  • Experience conducting in-depth live journalism, including moderating webinars and panels
  • A demonstrated interest in social impact work and passion for this specific topic area of global development, global issues and humanitarian aid
  • Proven attention to detail checking and copy-editing
  • Proficiency in French, Spanish or Arabic is an asset
  • Field reporting from humanitarian crises is an asset

Type: Full-time, one-year term with possibility of extension, 37.5 hours a week

Location: Anywhere in Canada, or the world. Occasional travel can be expected. We strongly encourage applications from journalists who are based in, or are residents, of the Global South.

Compensation: The salary range for this role is $67,000-77,000. We have a comprehensive benefits package, five weeks of paid vacation, unlimited health days, Fridays off in summer, and plenty of professional development and mentorship opportunities.

About working with Future of Good

Future of Good is a new organization; however, we strive to be a new type of organization. Benefits, wellness days and development opportunities are rare in many social purpose organizations, but we believe they are essential. Our values are courageous, thoughtful, curious, kind, professional and excellent.

Wellbeing matters.

At Future of Good, wellbeing is central to our cultural DNA. All Future of Good staff have five weeks of paid vacation, unlimited health days, Fridays off in the summer, and a comprehensive benefits package. Everybody talks about how good paid vacation is in Europe, so we looked it up and matched it.

Learning and growth matters.

We believe that continuous learning and unlearning help us realize our collective potential. All Future of Good staff get paid time off and technology and professional development funds to fuel their creativity, learning and growth. Attend a course, upgrade your laptop, sign up for a conference or learn new software.

Pay transparency matters.

All pay ranges at Future of Good are made public in postings. To go even further, all interview candidates are compensated for their interview time, and the ratio between the lowest-paid full-time employee and highest-paid full-time employee is no more than 3:1. So if the top must rise, then the bottom must increase too.
