About the Position
The Research and Analysis Specialist / Economist will play a key role in the development, implementation and management of high-quality and innovative research and analytical work on social and economic issues in low- and middle-income countries, under the direction of the Head of Social and Economic Analysis.
The successful candidate will become part of a team that loves working with data and applying economic tools and research methods to solve interesting challenges and provide our clients with the solutions and advice they need. She/he will collaborate closely with the three existing members of the Social and Economic Analysis team, as well as other specialists and external consultants, for the delivery of projects.
Examples of our recent work include: poverty and inequality profiles; costing tools and micro-simulations of the impact of social protection schemes; multisectoral situation analyses of children, older people, and persons with disabilities; country baseline reports for the global Sustainable Development Goals; large-scale household surveys on food security in refugee settlements; and impact evaluation designs.
The post holder will have a strong background in data analysis and research methods, in a field related to social and/or economic policy. She/he will be expected to work in our office in Orpington (south-east London). The role may also involve international travel for project-related purposes.
Main Responsibilities and Duties
- Lead and/or contribute to technical inputs for consultancy assignments (70%):
- Develop background research and literature reviews;
- Design research methodologies, household surveys, and other tools;
- Conduct quantitative data analysis;
- Coordinate preparations for missions and field research;
- Prepare training and workshop materials;
- Draft written outputs for reports and briefings.
- Develop internal research and contribute to analytical innovations (15%):
- Author and/or contribute to the development of Pathways’ own publications (‘Perspectives’) and writing of blogs;
- Participate in the rollout of new analytical tools and software (such as statistical programming languages and data visualisations);
- Actively participate in bi-weekly technical sessions and relevant conferences and events.
- Contribute to business development processes (10%):
- Draft written inputs for expressions of interest and proposals for new work opportunities.
- Undertake other duties within the scope of the position (5%).
- Knowledge and qualifications:
- Post-graduate degree in a relevant discipline.
- Understanding and familiarity with key concepts and debates in economic and social development.
- Highly proficient in research methods and approaches.
- Knowledge of at least one statistical software package (e.g. Stata, SPSS, R).
- Demonstrated experience in producing high quality research outputs.
- Significant experience in the management and analyses of data to support policy advice and recommendations.
- Some overseas field experience with international development organisations desirable.
- Skills and abilities:
- Excellent English writing skills and proven ability to draft policy-oriented reports.
- Solid analytical skills with demonstrated ability to work with diverse and complex quantitative and qualitative data from a wide range of sources.
- Comfortable working in a small team, with an ability to work on own initiative and under minimal supervision, to accept responsibility and to respond with confidence to complex and evolving problems.
- Willingness and ability to travel internationally, which may include overnight and weekends on occasion.

Recruitment will be at the mid- or senior-level, with the applicable grade to be assessed through the selection process, to reflect the level of experience, responsibility and international reputation of the individual.
