Job Description

Amnesty International is a global movement of more than 7 million people in over 100 countries and territories who campaign for a world where human rights are enjoyed by all. We investigate, expose and stand against injustice and repression, we speak out for and with those whose freedom, safety, and dignity are under threat, and we hold governments and other powerful actors accountable for human rights violations.

As our next Secretary General, you will hold one of the most important human rights positions in the world. You will be equal parts CEO, Diplomat, Strategist, Spokesperson, Activist, and Change Agent, with the backing of dedicated staff and passionate global supporter base, and our incredible legacy to build on.

You will provide leadership for Amnesty International at a time of unprecedented challenges and opportunities for human rights, you will help us deliver an ambitious new global strategy in the face of the changes sparked by the Covid-19 pandemic and the growing urgency of the climate crisis, and you will empower the movement to achieve a new level of global mobilization and solidarity. Alongside this, you will ensure that the finances and operations of the Secretariat are effective, sustainable, and underpinned by high standards of accountability and transparency. You will support the growth of a stronger and more diverse movement that acts boldly, shifts power, and embraces change.

You will bring experience as a leader in a complex global organization, understand and believe in the importance of human rights, and be able to connect with and inspire people from every walk of life. You will have the capacity to lead with passion, courage, humility, and integrity, working with and through others to help us achieve our mission.

We are committed to promoting leadership that reflects the diversity and equality of all rights-holders. We strongly encourage applications from people from groups that are traditionally under-represented in senior management of global organizations.

The closing date for applications will be the 24th July 2020.
