Job Description

Responsibilities

The incumbent is a middle level supervisor in the United Nations Security and Safety Section (UNSSS) and, under the overall command of the Chief, UNSSS, works under the direct supervision of a Security Lieutenant. Within the limits of delegated authority, the Security Sergeant will be responsible for ensuring the maintenance of smooth and efficient operations security and safety duties where s/he is assigned during the tour of duty. This may be as the direct supervisor of a group of officers entrusted with security duties like tour patrols, safety patrols and checks, provision of security and safety services to participants of major and important conference/meeting; regulating and controlling the flow of vehicles and pedestrians into and out of the Vienna International Centre (VIC); in the Security Control Centre; in the Pass Office, in Special Services or to any other middle level posting where s/he is assigned. Assist the Security Lieutenant in the daily organization, coordination and supervision of the work of officers assigned to a Platoon/Office. As required, assist the Lieutenant to conduct daily briefings and assign officers to various functions or posts as required; make recommendations to the Security Lieutenant on operational matters and assist in preparing plans and response procedures. Act as Close Protection Officer for VIPs as and when required. Organize and train Fire Wardens/Drill teams in line with evacuation procedures within the VIC and implement the internal training programmes for his/her unit as required; Provide input for the performance evaluation of security personnel under command; Perform all other related duties as assigned.

Professionalism – Demonstrated instant decision-making capacity under stressful conditions. Excellent knowledge of UNSSS standing operating procedures (SOPs) and other security policies, procedures and practices.

Planning and Organising – Ability to plan and organise assignments for officers under command; ability to provide oversight and take responsibility for delegated assignment of officers under command.

Client Orientation – Professional and courteous attitude to all clients.

Technological Awareness – Demonstrated working knowledge of computer hardware and software programs applicable to assigned duties and the security section.

Teamwork – Ability to facilitate teamwork for the benefit of the organization and section; Ability to work in a multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity.

Communication – Effective oral communication and clear writing skills and demonstrated ability to explain UN security policies and procedures; Maintain a high sense of confidentiality.

Managing performance – Ability to lead and motivate officers under command, backing up the Security Lieutenant, making sure that roles, responsibilities and reporting lines are clear to each staff member.

Judgement/Decisionmaking – Demonstrated sound judgement in applying technical expertise to resolve a wide range of security-related and other issues.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Completed secondary education or equivalent with supplemental security and safety operations or related training. Relevant post secondary education is an asset.

Work Experience

Minimum six years of progressively responsible working experience in different areas of security and safety operations.

Languages

Good oral and written skills in English. A working knowledge of German and of other UN languages considered added assets.

Other Skills

Demonstrated supervisory skills are desirable and a Security Management certification or equivalent from a UN recognised institution will be considered as an asset. Must be mentally and physically fit. All duties are performed in uniform; however, at times the Security Sergeant may be required to perform duties in civilian clothes. S/he is required to meet all UN firearms qualification standards. Certification for use of self-contained briefing apparatuses and certified fire/first aid training are considered as an asset.
