Job Description

RTI is currently accepting applications for the position of Senior Business Development Specialist to support our work in the Learning, Energy, and Environment for Development (LEED) division.

This position will be based in Washington, DC or Research Triangle Park, NC, with preference for Washington, DC.

  • Lead and/or write technical proposals for LEED’s two divisions: Energy; and Climate, Natural Resources, and Water (CNRW)
  • Assist LEED’s divisions in managing their respective pipelines: in vetting new opportunities via desk research and in-country capture; tracking funding opportunities through Salesforce and other management tools; and provide input on pursuit decisions;
  • Monitor long-term trends in the international development space and in LEED’s technical areas. Advise technical teams on pipeline and messaging in light of those trends;
  • Perform capture/proposal travel, including establishing relationships with clients, potential partners and/or local staff, gather operational information and country context, and analyze the competitive environment for considering RTI’s differentiators;
  • Mentor home-office staff – particularly early-career staff, new to business development – in writing proposals, performing capture, and fulfilling various roles on proposal teams. Lead or co-lead training in BD skills, as necessary;
  • Writing sections of, or complete, technical proposals for USAID, DFID, or other clients;
  • Work across the division and RTI on market data management and analysis and to determine metrics that best measure capture efficacy;
  • Coordinate development of new, and updating of current, marketing and informational materials as well as corporate capability statements;
  • Data analysis and modeling of future trends, using Tableau, Excel, or other data analysis tools;
  • As directed, serve as representative for RTI’s at relevant and strategic conferences/meetings.

  • Bachelor’s degree in international relations, development, business, or a related field and minimum of six (6) years’ of relevant experience, or Master’s degree and four (4) years’ experience working with international development implementors, particularly on USG-funded proposals/programs.
  • Prior experience and demonstrated success in proposal development for USAID and other international donors required, preferably in the energy, natural resources, or lifelong learning sectors.
  • Demonstrated experience writing donor-funded technical proposals, including for USAID;
  • Excellent writing skills, as demonstrated through positive client feedback and/or winning proposals;
  • Experience in knowledge management systems (experience with systems such as Salesforce and SharePoint, in particular);
  • Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to meet deadlines under pressure and manage multiple tasks and competing priorities;
  • Strong computer skills and ability to learn new systems easily; proficiency in Microsoft Office. Familiarity with Salesforce is desirable, though not required.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, problem-solving attitude, and ability to work both independently and as a collaborative team player;
  • Experience working or studying in developing countries desirable;
  • Domestic and international travel is required;
  • Native English fluency required; fluency in French and/or Spanish preferred.
  • Must be eligible to work in the U.S. without sponsorship.
