J/P HRO is seeking a dynamic, creative networker and thinker to be our next Senior Director of Development to build and implement the organization’s fundraising and development strategy while contributing to its partnership objectives.
The Senior Director of Development (SDD) will be a hungry go-getter and versatile individual who can create new opportunities and revenue streams through major gift fundraising, corporate support, and identifying and building donors relationships. This person will develop creative ways to engage potential donors through experiences and events. The SDD will also forge and grow partnerships that support our programs and elevate J/P HRO’s global marketing, communications, and campaigning work. He/she will work closely with the CEO and manage the Communications and Events Manager, to increase J/P HRO’s visibility in the donor community ensuring sustained financial health. For the first 2 years, it is estimated that 80% of the SDD’s time will be spent on new revenue generation and stakeholder engagement with 20% supporting the CEO with cultivating strategic, non-financial partnerships. At times, the SDD will be expected to represent the CEO at internal and external meetings and events when needed.
Specifically, the SDD will work to leverage the full assets and resources of J/P HRO to implement a formal global prospecting, cultivation, and revenue generation program aimed to drive $2 million in new annual revenue over the next 3 years. The SDD will work with the CEO, the development team, and relevant staff to identify areas of funding within the J/P HRO fundraising portfolio, develop strategies and tactics to cultivate new donors, and – at times – be responsible for ‘closing’ major gifts in support of J/P HRO’s mission. The SDD will manage the communications/events manager and work with the CEO, and other executives to ensure each donor has a positive donor experience with J/P.
The SDD should be an entrepreneurial influencer with a passion for cultivating new donors and partners to support J/P’s mission. He/she must be a savvy communicator with polished presentation skills. He/she will need to remain patient, flexible, manage multiple priorities at any given time, and understand how to manage complex stakeholder relationships including board members, donors, influencers, and other high-level stakeholders of J/P HRO. The SDD will need to possess a sophistication for working across teams and functions, understanding other departments’ goals and objectives and how they fit into the bigger picture, and working – diplomatically at times – so other teams understand and embrace development and partnership goals. Travel requirements will be moderate (20-30% and include periods of time that will require more travel than usual).
Given the small size of the organization, this position will require a hands-on manager who is able to create systems and processes for the department. This position will require someone to not only create and oversee the strategy for development, but also be an integral part in its execution.
- 10+ years’ experience managing broad operational initiatives in Development and Partnerships
- Proven track record of driving significant mission driven revenue
- Deep understanding of and passion for international development and emergency response
- Experience working with Board members and high net worth individuals
- Understand the media landscape and mission driven storytelling
- Experience developing proposals and presentations for a sophisticated audience
- Have an advanced understanding of partner needs and how to add value to their objectives
The SDD will be based in J/P’s headquarters in Los Angeles, CA and report to the CEO. He/she will manage the Communications and Events Manager and relevant development staff as assigned.
