Job Description

Chaloner has partnered with Resource Media in their search for a Senior Program Director to be based out of their Philadelphia office.

Resource Media works to create a more just and sustainable world by harnessing the power of communications and community to create change. As a mission-driven nonprofit PR firm, we value an equitable and inclusive workplace.

We are seeking to hire a Senior Program Director in the Philadelphia area to help lead on work in clean water and climate justice. We do not require past experience in these issues, but are looking for a seasoned communications strategist that is comfortable working independently and managing complex campaigns, and client relationships. Ideal candidates will have at least five years experience with media relations and staff or program management. This will be our first hire in Philadelphia, with the position reporting to a director in Washington DC. Resource Media will pay for co-working or other comparable office space.

The duties of the Senior Program Director include, but are not limited to, the following:

Communications Work

  • Develop and execute comprehensive communications strategies that include messaging, strategy and traditional and digital media tactics.
  • Proactively provide ideas, guidance and capacity to partners throughout campaigns and projects.
  • Lead media and public opinion research projects; develop recommendations based on research findings.
  • Facilitate interactive trainings and workshops on a variety of communications topics, both in person and via webinar.

Project Management

  • Lead project and campaign staff teams, including staff at Resource Media, partner organizations and contractors.
  • Keep partners and funders apprised or our work, and manage budgets, Salesforce records, and reporting requirements.
  • Mentor new colleagues and junior staff, and facilitate opportunities for their growth and development.

Business Development

  • Develop and maintain deep issue expertise and hold primary relationships with key funders and clients.
  • Represent Resource Media with funders and clients at key meetings and conferences.
  • Enterprise new clients and funder leads; scope prospective projects, and write persuasive proposals.

Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

  • Participate in equity and inclusion work in the organization, including serving on the equity committee when needed.
  • Demonstrate a keen understanding of one’s own race, culture and identity and how it fits into the staff and client environment and landscape, as well as the world at large.
  • Model vulnerability and accountability and invite feedback from partners, allies, funders and staff on DEI work and leadership.
  • Practice a sense of awareness for how racial, gender, and other privileges affect dynamics in Communications work.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to dismantling racism, sexism, homophobia, classism, and other -isms that oppress underserved communities.
  • Can communicate across differences in a way that fosters learning and understanding; ability to work within and for a number of different audiences.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to quickly get up to speed on new projects, and lead independently from start to finish.
  • Familiarity with the local and regional politics and media markets.
  • Comfortable managing the needs and expectations of multiple stakeholders and agendas. Experience working with foundations and their grantees a plus.
  • Strong facilitation and training skills, including the ability to manage conflict constructively.
  • Excellent project management skills, demonstrated by the ability to track timelines, budgets and contributions from colleagues and consultants while providing quality control and managing partner expectations.
  • Capacity to respond rapidly and appropriately to changing priorities, objectives and situations.
  • Strong understanding of traditional and digital media platforms and strategies.
  • Basic understanding of public policy and the role of communications in building support for social change.
  • Exceptional writing skills and storytelling skills.
  • Vulnerability and candor; willingness to give and receive real-time feedback
  • Sensitivity toward dynamics between white mainstream audiences and the needs and priorities of diverse communities; understanding of the tools needed to reach, mobilize and empower diverse communities.
  • Ability to read and write fluently in a second language, e.g., Spanish, a plus.

  • Salary range: $90k+ with a generous benefits package
  • Reports to: Managing Program Director in Washington DC
  • Location: Philadelphia preferred but will consider other locations in the region
