Summary

The Implementer-Led Design, Evidence, Analysis and Learning (IDEAL) activity, funded by the USAID Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance (BHA), works to support the United States Government’s goal of improving food and nutrition security among the world’s most vulnerable households and communities. IDEAL addresses knowledge and capacity gaps expressed by the food and nutrition security implementing community to support them in the design and implementation of effective development and emergency food security activities. The Senior Instructional Design Specialist is a member of the Knowledge Management and Communications team and will work closely with subject matter experts across the consortium to ensure that IDEAL’s capacity strengthening activities are effectively designed and delivered. You will be critical to IDEAL’s work of translating in-person courses and workshops to engaging online learning formats, as well as in-person and blended workshops (once possible).

What You’ll Be Doing (Essential Duties)

  • Lead the production of e-learning courses, workshops, and learning event sessions, from concept note development to final activity design, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Assess knowledge and learning needs of food security implementing partners across contexts, in close collaboration with key stakeholders, such as USAID/BHA, IDEAL’s Program Advisory Committee, and associate awards, among others.
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts within IDEAL and its associate awards to design engaging e-learning courses, workshops, and learning event sessions that are fit-for-purpose.
  • Design courses and sessions with measurable and output-driven objectives, and aligned activities that reflect industry standards in adult learning, consistently promoting knowledge transfer and application.
  • Develop course, workshop, or learning session materials, such as facilitator’s guides, participants’ guides, slides, job aids, virtual work spaces, and assessment materials
  • Lay out course or workshop content onto the selected e-learning platform. Coordinate alpha- and beta-testing among stakeholders for e-learning initiatives and implement changes to content and materials, as necessary.
  • Support learning event session presenters in designing their session modalities
  • Facilitate workshops and learning event sessions, as needed.
  • Support IDEAL’s intentional learning and continuous improvement culture by participating in and/or leading Scrum sprints, after-action reviews, and documentation and dissemination of learning and assessments.
  • Recruit and manage the work of consultants and vendors contracted to support design and implementation of courses, workshops or learning sessions.

Required Qualifications

  • 5-7 years of relevant experience
  • Bachelor degree in a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in using a variety of engaging and effective adult learning approaches, both in-person and online
  • Proven team player, skilled in facilitating discussions and obtaining consensus across a broad range of stakeholders
  • Experience in reviewing and ensuring that specific graphic design/branding guidelines are followed
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in using a variety of e-learning platforms
  • Proficient professional oral and written communication skills in English
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, primarily Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, and Teams
  • Willing and able to travel internationally up to 10% of the time

Preferred Qualifications

  • Human-centered design skills
  • Experience using online collaborative whiteboard tools such as Miro and Mural
  • Ability to conduct business in French
  • Experience working in a developing country in international development or emergency programs
  • Familiarity with food security programming
  • Familiarity with US Government-funded projects, particularly USAID
