Specialist adviser opportunity to support development of the education sector in Tuvalu

The Australian Government has established the Fiji Program Support Facility (the Facility) to support development programs in Fiji and Tuvalu. This support includes technical assistance, managing funds and personnel, and logistical and administrative services for programs set out in Australia’s Aid Investment Plans in Fiji and Tuvalu.
The Facility actively integrates cross cutting priorities of civil society engagement, gender equality, disability inclusiveness, climate change, child protection and disaster risk resilience in Fiji and Tuvalu. The Australian Support to Education in Tuvalu Program, builds on the achievements of previous programs focusing interventions on: improved quality of learning for children, particularly in literacy and numeracy in years 1 – 4 (with 5-8 to follow in later years); increased access to TVSD as the second pathway to education; improved functioning of the education system.
The Short Term Special / Inclusive Education Adviser will work with the Director of Education; Lead Education Adviser; the Senior Education Officer (SEO), School Support/Supervisory Unit; other relevant SEOs, civil society organisations, and schools. The job will involve the development of a well-coordinated and accessible special and inclusive education service with policy and strategy which meets the needs of children with special educational needs.
The ideal candidate will have Post graduate tertiary qualifications in special / inclusive education learning and teaching and at least ten years of successful experience working effectively in a relevant role in a development context. Demonstrated experience in advocating on behalf of children with special needs and in developing positive and inclusive attitudes and practices among parents and community members in developing (preferably Pacific) contexts will be highly regarded. Candidates must have strong experience in developing special needs and learning disabilities curriculum, learning programs and eLearning materials.
To ensure success candidates will need to demonstrate communications skills, including the ability to liaise, negotiate, dialogue and discuss openly with Education Officers at all levels within the Education Department, other development projects and advisors working in related areas in Tuvalu. Knowledge of and commitment to incorporating cross cutting issues including gender equality, social inclusion, child protection and environment into all program activities is required.
