Specialist Health Service (SHS)
Managed by Abt Associates Australia and located in the centre of Canberra, the Specialist Health Service provides strategic input on health to the Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. DFAT posts and desks around the globe and in Canberra may contact the SHS for assistance with any health-related topic. The SHS allows DFAT to source high quality technical advice to support health policy, strategic planning and health programming across the aid management cycle. The SHS maintains panels of pre-vetted experts in numerous health technical subjects. The SHS staff guide, manage and quality assure the advice, as well as preparing brief reviews and technical inputs to support Australian Government staff.
We are seeking highly motivated candidates for the SHS Director position to lead the delivery of the Specialist Health Service for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT).
Reporting to the Abt Vice President, Strategy and Technical Services, this key role will drive policy engagement with DFAT providing high level technical guidance and advice on health and development policy and programming issues across all SHS activities. With ultimate accountability for the quality of work and financial management of SHS, the successful individual will bring excellent communication and interpersonal skills to the role with a proven ability to develop productive relationships and communicate with a broad range of stakeholders.
The successful candidate will be appropriately qualified and will have a minimum of ten years international experience in the health and development sectors in low and low/middle income countries, preferably with a focus on the Indo-Pacific region. With an in-depth understanding of Australia’s role in the global health development context, and strong knowledge and experience of current topical health and development issues, extensive experience as a senior consultant/adviser is required. With a focus on leading, developing and managing a dedicated and talented team, the ideal individual will bring a demonstrated ability to energise and build high performing teams, provide strategic leadership and drive exceptional quality.
