Your role

As a (Senior) Sustainability Strategy Officer at FMO, you will collaborate closely with other direct team members and various sustainability and impact-related teams. Together you will effectively integrate ESG, sustainable finance regulation, climate risk, and Paris alignment topics into the investment process. You will report directly to the Manager Sustainability Strategy and Policy (SSP). Your advanced climate expertise including Paris Alignment and EU Sustainable Finance Regulations is indispensable for this role.

In the role of (Senior) Sustainability Strategy Officer you:

  • Support our Managing Board and senior management on strategic and business development topics and the implementation of our Strategy 2030: Pioneer- Develop-Scale.
  • Prepare high quality materials for the Impact Sustainability Committee (ISCO), Management Board and the Supervisory Board. This will help them make informed decisions on impact and sustainability issues.
  • Conduct research and analysis to inform strategy and policy making. This work supports thought leadership and advances the goals of FMO’s development impact agenda. With a focus on Climate Action (SDG 13). You will work for example on topics like Paris Alignment, Just and Inclusive Transition, or on biodiversity and climate change mitigation and adaptation.
  • Monitor and report on external developments that relate to our impact agenda, sustainable finance landscape. This includes relevant standards, legislations, and regulations.
  • Support interpretation of (potential) implications and impacts on FMO of external developments and trends. Give support in translation into strategy and policy (changes).
  • Engage with external stakeholders to bring an outside-in perspective and further our strategic agenda.
  • Prepare presentations and impact agenda related events.
  • Prepare inputs for (recurring) reports. For example, Integrated quarterly report and our annual report, and other benchmarks like World Benchmarking Alliance.
  • Lead or support workstreams of cross-departmental projects owned by the department, such as the EU Sustainable Finance and Climate Action Projects.

Your team

The Strategy Department focuses on FMO’s strategy, guiding our Managing Board and top leaders on vital issues throughout the “strategy cycle.” The department consists of four teams with nearly 40 colleagues. The main activities of the department consist of:

  • Strategic context and trend analysis.
  • Driving thought leadership and policy advice on FMO’s SDG / development impact agenda.
  • Responsibility for, and support of, strategy setting and implementation, annual business planning and change project selection and monitoring.
  • Key support for making us a “learning organization” via evaluations and knowledge management.

The Strategy department just completed FMO’s Strategy 2030: Pioneer-Develop-Scale. Over the next few years, our role will be vital in helping the organization reach its ambitious targets. Our strategy clearly aims to maximize our impact while ensuring a satisfactory return and keeping risks at an acceptable level. This requires integrated strategic oversight and planning across the impact, return and risk spectrum.

FMO’s Strategy Department includes the Sustainability Strategy and Policy team. This team offers practical strategic advice and leads in thought. It also aids in guiding and making high-level decisions about our SDG and Development Impact goals. Currently, we concentrate on three key SDGs: SDG 8, SDG 10, and SDG 13. As well as on Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) and Sustainability Standards and Sustainable Finance & Climate Risk Regulations. Our team members bring together a wealth of experience from outside and within FMO. Their expertise spans banking, strategy, business development, and project management. Moreover, they share a deep commitment to our mission of creating developmental impact.

Your background

Your interest in FMO’s impact goals and the sustainable development agenda is strong and you understand (development) finance. You think ahead and come up with solutions. You are self-reflective and willing to adapt your own attitude and views to changing circumstances. You love to collaborate with colleagues. You have strong interpersonal skills and are comfortable in interaction with senior management. You can easily manage, connect and bring together diverse stakeholder interests. You act as a persuasive and, when needed, assertive advisor. You are eager to take on responsibility, learn and build. You can roll up your sleeves when needed to produce documents to support discussions and decisions. You are pragmatic and result oriented. You have excellent verbal and written communication skills in English. A conceptual and creative thinker, that is you.

Besides this, you possess:

  • 8+ years relevant working experience in climate action, sustainable finance, (development) banking, impact investment, consulting or similar functions.
  • Master’s degree in finance, economics, sustainability or related field.
  • Strong research, writing and analytical skills and experience with providing operational policy advice to senior management.
  • Good communication skills and capable to work with people having different capabilities and skills.
  • External stakeholder management experience.
