8.7 Million North Koreans Need Emergency Food Aid, UN Says

Immediate food aid will be needed to feed an estimated 8.7 million North Koreans, roughly 40 percent of the population, as food production in the Asian nation is expected to dwindle, United Nations agencies warned. “DPRK will face a severe food situation over the coming months” due to critical fertilizer and fuel shortages, Henri Josserand, chief of the Food and Agriculture Organization’s Global Information and Early Warning System, said. Young, pregnant and elderly citizens will be most vulnerable to the looming food crisis. (“U.N. says 8.7 mln North Koreans need food aid” - Thomson Reuters, Dec. 8, 2008)
