ADB Responds to Recent Flooding in the Solomon Islands

Last February, floods washed away bridges and left people homeless in the Solomon Islands. As the lead donor in infrastructure development to the South Pacific nation, the Asian Development will provide additional assistance to reconstruct bridges and roads in Guadalcanal which was badly hit during the flooding.

Devex Early Intelligence learned from a bank officer that the fresh allocation will also cover the funding gap of an ongoing road improvement project.

In its 2008-2010 country operations plan for Solomon Islands, ADB committed to support recovery and rehabilitation to address the damages caused by the 2007 earthquake and tsunami. The bank's assistance focuses on transport infrastructure. In November 2008, ADB approved an infrastructure investment project and is currently in the process of developing a rural transport initiative.
