Aid pledges follow calamity in Bangladesh

Assurances of aid from various donor agencies have poured into Bangladesh, following the devastation caused by Cyclone “Sidr”. Britain has pledged USD5 million and the United States announced USD2 million; European Union member countries are expected to follow suit. The cyclone has claimed 2,300 lives with the toll expected to mount after relief and rescue efforts are exhausted. “It may cross 5,000, but it will remain below 10,000,” said Mohammad Abdur Rab, chairman of the Bangladeshi Red Crescent Society. Government representatives have labeled the debacle as a “national calamity,” as it has wiped out crops, destroyed homes and caused sweeping power outages across the country.
