Ashton Seals Crucial Deal for EU Diplomatic Service

European Union foreign affairs chief Catherine Ashton and European foreign ministers reached an agreement on how the proposed EU diplomatic service will take shape, Irish Times reports. The deal leaves only the members of the European Parliament in the way of creating the new body, the newspaper adds.

Ashton and the EU foreign ministers ironed out the role of the European Commission in appointing senior diplomats and managing some of the external service’s funds. The agreement also gives the proposed body power to carry out some consular services.
