Ask Devex: The importance of networking

An excerpt from the “Ask Devex” online event. Devex Career Account members can watch the full recording below.

Natalia Douma joined Devex for this month’s event to provide recruiter insights on job opportunities in Africa; advice on finding consultancy gigs; and the importance of networking to land a job in global development.

The senior manager of recruitment at DAI, handles overseas recruitment for Africa and has extensive experience in business development for international projects. Douma spent the past decade working with DAI on full-cycle recruitment processes, hiring for corporate-based positions, short and long-term consultancy projects, and field staff positions.

Networking and building relationships are critical to landing jobs in the sector, stressed Douma in the webinar. For country nationals looking to work locally, she recommended staying up-to-date with current projects and getting in touch with organizations to create networking opportunities.

Douma oversees monthly trips aimed at recruiting and forming long-term relationships with development professionals working in their own country. Many implementing agencies and consultancies look to hire local staff when putting together proposals, as well as in the months following successful project bids, continued Douma, so job seekers should get to know the organizations and the technical areas they work in.
