Working in global development isn’t just any job. As a development professional, your career decisions have the potential to change entire communities and the world. Yes, that is a big statement. But it is true. However you identify yourself — aid worker, humanitarian, development professional, social entrepreneur, changemaker — you are working on solving some of the most pressing issues of our time.
Navigating this career path, which is full of challenges, opportunities and nuance you don’t find in other industries, can be daunting for both the novice and the veteran. Common career advice does not always apply.
That is where we’d like to help. As the go-to recruitment provider to the development community, we understand what employers across the world — from startups, to small consulting firms to large international NGOs and aid agencies — are looking for and what it takes to succeed.
Part of my job here at Devex is to be your ears on the ground, understanding the latest trends and how they are impacting careers in the global development landscape. Working with our team of recruiters, business analysts and reporters, I get a unique perspective on everything from what you should (and shouldn’t) put in your CV, to new skills and technologies every professional should master, to policy changes that could impact job opportunities, salaries or staff welfare.

One of my favorite parts of my job is meeting professionals in the Devex community, learning their stories and sharing this knowledge to help them navigate their careers in this dynamic environment.
Starting next week, I will be hosting a regular column, Ask Devex, where I will answer real career questions from our community. Trying to decide between two job opportunities? Not sure how your private sector experience fits into a development career? Contemplating going back to graduate school but can’t settle on a program? Send any and all global development career questions my way.
I don’t have all of the answers. When I’m not sure, I will bring in other experts to weigh in. I also hope you, our Devex community, will share your advice and expertise. Afterall, there is so much we can all learn from each other.
There are several ways you can get in touch with your questions. You can submit them anonymously here, send an email to email@example.com or tweet me @DevexCareers. Only first names or preferred pseudonyms will be used in the column.
I look forward to helping you tackle your biggest career challenges so you can do more good for more people.
