Australia Urged to Adopt Human Rights-based Aid Approach

An independent United Nations expert has called on the Australian government to adopt a human rights-based approach in its foreign aid program.

“A human rights-based approach would not only enhance the effectiveness of AusAID’s programmes, but would also contribute to achieving sustainable results,” according to Cephas Lumina, the independent expert designated by the U.N. Human Rights Council to monitor the effects of foreign debt on the fulfillment of human rights, as quoted by the U.N. News Center.

In a statement released over the weekend, Lumina said: “[A]lthough some of its [AusAID] programme sectors directly or indirectly promote human rights, AusAID does not have a specific policy requiring all its programmes to be consistent with a human rights-based approach to development.”
