Dr. Jose Maya is a plastic surgeon from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México and president of Centro SUMA, a comprehensive care center for patients born with cleft. He specialized in plastic and reconstructive surgery at Mexico’s General Hospital; worked at the children’s hospital of Tacubaya, treating burned patients and children born with cleft, and at the cleft clinic of the ABC Medical Center. He was a professor at UNAM’s Medical School as well as at the Nursing School at The American British Cowdray Hospital. He has been a Smile Train partner since 2012.
While the multidisciplinary field of global surgery aims to increase health equity for many of the world’s most vulnerable patients, its practices and structures often unwittingly reinforce the very inequities it seeks to address.
