In a March 17 phone call with Bahrain’s king, Sheik Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon expressed deep concern over reports of indiscriminate and excessive use of force by local police and security forces against demonstrators in the country. Ban urged for maximum restraint from Bahraini security forces and called for open dialogue between the government and the protesters. The secretary-general also underscored the importance of genuine economic, political and social reforms in achieving sustained peace and stability, according to the U.N. News Center.
