Ban Appoints Augustine Mahiga as UN Envoy to Somalia

Augustine Mahiga has been appointed the new United Nations envoy to Somalia. His appointment as special representative of the secretary-general and head of the U.N. Political Office for Somalia was announced by U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in a statement dated June 9.

Mahiga is Tanzania’s ambassador to the U.N. and has prior experience serving various positions at the Office of the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees.

Mahiga will succeed Ahmedou Ould-Abdallah, who has been the U.N. envoy to Somali since September 2007.
