Environmental protection should be a fundamental component of the strategy to attain the Millennium Development Goals, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said. “Without a sustainable environmental base, we will have little hope of attaining our objectives for reducing poverty and hunger and improving health and human well-being,” he said in a message on International Mother Earth Day.Climate change, pollution and biodiversity loss, Ban said, are some of the consequences of humans’ “neglectful stewardship” of environmental resources.
