Ban: Harness ICT Potential for Development

The world should “fully harness” the potential of information and telecommunications technologies to promote sustainable development and international peace as well as to enhance lifesaving services, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said in his message for the World Telecommunications and Information Society Day.

The secretary-general also reiterated the U.N.’s commitment to helping provide the world with equal access to information and communication technologies.

“Greater access can mean faster progress toward the Millennium Development Goals,” Ban noted in his statement.

The theme for this year’s World Telecommunications and Information Society Day is “Better Cities, Better Life with ICTs,” which Ban said is a reminder of how communications technologies can be employed to raise standard of living while still protecting the environment.
