Bangladesh banks on ADB support for hydropower project

Bangladesh wants to borrow funds from the Asian Development Bank to shore up the Karnaphuli and the Barapukuria hydroelectric plants. Power secretary, Fouzul Kabir Khan, will broach the request at the third Asian Development Fund donor meeting in Manila this week. “We are planning to install two more units at the Karnaphuli plant as the generation cost of hydropower is low and Kaptai Lake has the water level required for the unit installation. We have already sought government approval for a project to set up the third unit at the Barapukuria plant,” said a government representative. “We will place before the lenders and donor agencies our needs and try to get whatever the amount they can give for the upgrade of the transmission and distribution systems,” the official continued.
