Bill Gates Hopes Obama Will Keep Campaign Pledge on Foreign Aid

Leading philanthropist Bill Gates is hoping that the incoming Obama administration will be able to sustain foreign aid levels in spite of the financial crisis. In a speech at George Washington University in Washington, the Microsoft founder stressed the need to back Obama’s campaign pledge to double U.S. foreign assistance to USD50 billion by 2012. “If we can support the president as he stands by his pledge to the poorest nations – even in the face of our own financial crisis – it will make a phenomenal statement about the kind of partner America plans to be in the world,” Gates said.
