Brimmer: Global Crisis Calls for Global Response

The international community has been quick to deliver a coordinated response to assist quake-ravaged Haiti in rebuilding its economy and infrastructure, according to a senior U.S. official.

“The strong outpouring of international support for Haiti over the past two months has been extraordinary, and represents a global response to a global crisis,” U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for International Organizations Esther Brimmer wrote in The Huffington Post.

The recent earthquake disaster in Haiti has once again underscored the indispensable role of the United Nations and other international institutions in attending to global emergencies, according to Brimmer.

“While not perfect, the response of the United Nations, including by the UN Stabilization Mission in Haiti, which lost 100 peacekeepers to the earthquake, has been inspiring, and it is a glimpse into the true potential of the international community to respond to global disasters and conflicts,” she added.
