Burkina Faso

Two boys in northern Burkina Faso have contracted yellow fever in a fresh outbreak of the disease that has already claimed the life of the eldest child, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported Nov. 3. The WHO regional laboratory at the Institut Pasteur in Dakar, Senegal, confirmed that the two boys were originally diagnosed in early October. Neither child was vaccinated, according to a press release issued Nov. 3 by WHO, despite the routine infant immunization program in Ouahigouya, which started in 2002 and was expanded in 2007 to reach over 85 per cent of children in the area.
