U.S. President George W. Bush is calling on American legislators to approve funds amounting to USD400 million for the Palestinian Authority. The hefty aid increase is seen as a move to support efforts by PA President Mahmoud Abbas and Prime Minister Salaam Fayad to improve infrastructure and meet the government’s financial obligations. “The general mood up there is that there isn’t going to be vast opposition,” said a Capitol Hill source. “These guys are doing the right thing and people want to help them,” he added, referring to Abbas and Fayad. Of the proposed amount, USD350 million will come in the form of budget support and economic assistance, while the rest would be used to help Palestinian refugees.
