Aid groups are pleased with the latest legislation that earned the nod of the Canadian parliament. “Canada’s foreign aid must now focus on poverty reduction, take into account the priorities of the people living in poverty and be consistent with Canada’s international human rights obligations,” according to Gerry Barr, who heads the Canadian Council for International Co-operation. In addition, the bill, which Toronto Liberal MP John McKay authored, also requires establishing a new reporting system for aid programs.
