China has promised to maintain all its aid programs for Fiji despite last year’s coup. Cai Jinbiao, Chinese Ambassador to Fiji, stated that the political situation is largely an internal matter for the country, and that Fiji can still receive its share from around $370 million in relief funds, which China has set aside for Pacific island countries. Although Australia and New Zealand have sanctioned Fiji for the coup in 2006, China has expressed its intent to go on with its grant aid projects, including the Navuso Bridge and Somosomo hydro-electric power project. Jinbiao said that China is just waiting for Fiji’s application before it is forwarded to Beijing for processing.
