The Canadian International Development Agency has yet to spend any of the USD150.4 million under the Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund, Macleans reports. The fund emerged from the government’s promise to match donations by Canadians toward Haiti relief efforts.
Macleans reporter Michael Petrou cited a CIDA reply where the agency said HERF funds “will be disbursed in the near future” as aid officials coordinate with the Haitian government and other humanitarian agencies on where best to use the resources.
“CIDA officials are in close contact with the Government of Haiti and our humanitarian and development partners to determine the optimal use of these resources as relief, recovery and reconstruction needs are further identified. In keeping with its mandate to manage Canadian aid effectively, CIDA will disburse funds from the HERF as this process takes place,” Macleans quotes CIDA.
