Costa Rica

Taiwan announced June 7 that it would sever diplomatic relations with Costa Rica, which earlier said it was establishing ties with China. ?We will immediately end our ties with Costa Rica and terminate all cooperation programs,? Foreign Minister James Huang said, accusing Costa Rican President Oscar Arias of ditching the democratic and peaceful Taipei over an authoritarian Beijing. Latin America, the South Pacific and Africa are the main diplomatic battlegrounds for the two rivals, which have accused each other of ?checkbook diplomacy? to lure each other?s allies. (AFP)
