Donor agencies call for Africa flood relief

Aid agencies have sent out an appeal to the international community to provide millions of dollars in emergency relief aid to flood-ravaged Africa. The floods have already hit 17 countries in the continent, including Burkina Faso, Ghana, Togo, Sudan, Uganda, and Kenya, and have claimed at least 200 lives and rendered thousands of Africans homeless. To date, the United Nations has appealed for $43 million for Uganda, and the British Red Cross has sent relief experts to Africa to facilitate fund-raising initiatives for the flood victims. Meanwhile, the European Commission will be giving $15.4 million in humanitarian aid, and the United States has promised to give $100,000 to Uganda to help those affected by the calamity.
