Donors agree Haiti needs more aid

Donors acknowledged that long-term aid is necessary to boost economic growth and stability in Haiti. Prot von Kunow, who represented the German government in a conference in Basilia, said “donors in general are ready to help more, although it is not clear how much money they will put on the table.” A July 2004 conference yielded $1.1 billion in pledges, and according to the Brazilian foreign ministry, 90 percent of the amount has been used up. Last week, the World Bank urged donors to immediately extend aid to the Caribbean nation, which saw on May 14 its first democratic elections since an armed rebellion unseated former President Jean-Bertrand Aristide.
