Donors Beef Up Fight against Neglected Diseases in Latin America and Caribbean

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), Inter-American Development Bank and other partner agencies will collaborate to put up a trust fund aimed at controlling and wiping out neglected diseases in Latin America and the Caribbean including intestinal worm infections, river blindness, leprosy, Chagas disease and schistosomiasis,

. "We have the tools and the interventions and I believe that it is possible to eliminate some of these diseases within a period of 5 to 10 years," said Jarbas Barbosa, manager of health surveillance and disease prevention and control at PAHO.
