The European Commission pledged more than USD5 million to assist conflict victims in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s North Kivu region. An estimated 40,000 people were newly displaced due to the hostilities between Congolese armed forces and the rebel movement Congres National de la Defense du Peuple. The commission also intends to draw nearly USD15.4 million from the 10th European Development Fund to immediately respond to the humanitarian situation in the African nation, European Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Aid Louis Michel said.
