EC to Promote Environmental Sustainability in the Mediterranean

The European Commission will fund various projects for environmental sustainability in the Mediterranean Sea Basin.

A program manager at the Joint Managing Authority told Devex Early Intelligence that the EC will fund efforts to reduce environmental risks and to improve energy efficiency in the region.

The commission's support will be channeled through the European Neighborhood and Partnership Instrument. The instrument will serve countries such as Malta, Greece, Cyprus, Turkey, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt, Israel, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, the Palestinian Authority and Libya.

An indicative 62.5 million euros (US$89 million) has been set aside to finance the activities for 2007-2013.
