The US State Department called the expulsion of the second US diplomat from Ecuador in just over a week "unjustified," rejecting charges the diplomats meddled in Ecuador's internal affairs. Acting Deputy Spokesman Gordon Duguid said the expulsions stem from the fact that certain Ecuadorian police were banned from taking part in US counter-narcotics training programs, but rejected "any suggestion of wrongdoing by embassy staff." A senior State Department official suggested the police in Ecuador did not meet the vetting criteria to take part in the training. (CNN)
