Egypt said its defense forces are prepared to join a multinational operation under the auspices of the UN to patrol the Gulf of Aden after a spate of piracy attacks off Somalia’s coast. “We are ready to get involved in United Nations forces to protect the area as long as no one country is responsible for the operations,” Egyptian cabinet spokesman Magdy Rady said. Companies including Euronav NV and TMT Co. Ltd., owners of ships designed to haul Middle East crude to Europe and the US, have said that they are reviewing whether to stop sending their carriers through the Suez Canal to avoid traveling near the site of most of the attacks off the coast of Somalia.
