EU begins disbursing Palestinian aid

The European Commission started sending “allowances” to Palestinian doctors and nurses as part of an initiative to ease the financial crisis in the Palestinian territories. “Today we started giving money to the health sector, that means giving allowances for the people working in the medical sector from doctors to nurses and to all people there,” External Affairs Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner said. Aside from the financial support to medical workers, the package, according to the commission, also involves “deliveries of fuel for hospital generators, water pumps and water treatment plants following the destruction by the Israel Defence Force of six transformers of the Gaza power plant.” (Sources: EU starts payments to Palestinian doctors, nurses/Reuters; EU Commmisssioner in Gaza to oversee aid distribution/Agence France-Presse)
