The European Commission’s humanitarian relief department is providing urgent aid to Yemen, Pakistan and Nigeria.

Some euro15 million (USD19.5 million) will be made available to address humanitarian needs due to internal conflicts in and the influx of refugees from the Horn of Africa to Yemen. The bloc provided euro10 million in humanitarian aid to Yemen last year. It has opened a humanitarian office in Yemen to monitor and coordinate the delivery of aid.

ECHO has also contributed euro5 million to the International Organization for Migration to help construct emergency and one-room shelters in flood-ravaged areas of Pakistan. ECHO has previously provided euro4 million to the initiative. At least 15,000 families in Sindh and Punjab provinces will benefit from the new funding through the provision of tents or plastic sheets and essential nonfood relief items.

Meanwhile, UNICEF will receive euro3 million from ECHO to curb child malnutrition in Nigeria. The funding will benefit northern Nigerian states of Kebbi, Sokoto, Katsina, Zamfara, Jigawa, Yobe and Borno.
