EU Officials Meet to Discuss Haiti, MDGs

Eight European Union ministers, newly-appointed EU development commissioner Andris Piebalgs and eighteen other EU member state officials will meet Feb. 17-18 to discuss Europe’s earthquake response in Haiti and review the continent’s progress on the U.N. Millennium Development goals. U.S. Agency for International Development Administrator Rajiv Shah and European Parliament Committee on Development Chair Eva Joly have been invited to the meeting.

This EU Informal Meeting of Ministers for Development, to be held in Segovia, also includes discussion on aid effectiveness, new mechanisms for development finance and the international division of labor. Formal aid pledges and written conclusions are not expected from the meeting, which main purpose is to set foundations for upcoming formal discussions in Brussels and Luxembourg.
