The European Union announced plans to extend the temporary funding mechanism which funnels aid direct to Palestinians bypassing the Hamas-led Palestinian government. “Today we have to propose another extension to the Temporary International Mechanism for a further three months beyond the end of this year,? EU External Relations commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner said, citing the deteriorating conditions in the Palestinian Territories. The aid mechanism, set up in June, channeled more than EUR200 million ($264 million) to finance water, health and sanitation services for more than 1.3 million Palestinians and paid allowances of about a million people. The EU, United States, Russia and the United Nations suspended assistance to the Palestinian government following the election victory of Hamas, a perceived terror group by the West. The quartet has called on Hamas to recognize Israel’s right to exist and commit to peace as conditions for resuming aid.
