The European Commission will provide a grant of EUR100 million ($143 million) to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, and is seeking the approval of E.U. governments and the European Parliament for another EUR300 million ($403.5 million) in contributions for 2008-2010. Launched by the G8 in 2002, the Global Fund has given treatment and drugs to about 1.1 million AIDS victims and over 2.8 million sufferers of TB, and has distributed bed nets to combat malaria to nearly 30 million families worldwide. Over the past five years, the European Commission has extended EUR522 million ($702 million) in aid to the initiative.
