European Commission Proposes Humanitarian Aid Corps

The European Commission has adopted a communication to establish the European Voluntary Humanitarian Aid Corps.

The corps will enhance existing voluntary schemes through selection, training and deployment of volunteers. It will be demand-driven and needs-based and will back local capacities to prevent duplication and funding diversion.

“The Corps will enable Europeans to express their commitment to our solidarity, and to work together as citizens of the EU. By helping people affected by disasters, we have the opportunity to contribute to a more cohesive European society,” said Kristalina Georgieva, European commissioner for international cooperation, humanitarian aid and crisis response.

Georgieva launched Sept. 30 a stakeholders’ consultation conference for establishing the corps.
